George and the art of the recall.

So, back with training George.

This dog has mastered the Sit & Down commands – not a problem.

One of the most vital commands your dog will know is the recall. This is so important for you as the owner to have this control over your dog – to ensure he returns to you on command.

It is vital from a control point of view, for safety and for good communication & understanding with your dog.

No doubt, you will have seen the owner screaming at their dog trying to get the to return – think about about it, if someone was screaming at you, would you come back?

Recall is something that has to be worked on, gradually but continuously.

The trick is to start small and reward.

If you start by doing it from the other side of a room, the other end of a corridor – not too far and not out of sight.

Give the command and treat the correct response. We found that mixing it up worked well too – not always treats but a pat on the back and a cuddle. Just enough to reinforce they have done the right thing.

One thing you must never do is shout or smack them for not obeying. This will only reinforce a negative and they won’t want to come to you.

Persistence and patientence are key.

You want them to want to come to you – to make you happy and to get a treat 🍪🐶!
